HIGH CROSS AT TULLY

DISCOVERED AND SAVED BY JAMES F GREHAN

I used a Sony NEX-5 to photograph this monument. I was at the beginning of the switch from Canon DSLR to Sony Mirorrles equipment.

The High Cross of Laughanstown, located near the ruins of Tully Church, stands as a prominent landmark and a testament to a bygone era. Situated on what was once a tranquil country lane back in 2011, it has borne witness to the passage of time and the transformation of its surroundings.

In 2011, the cross stood tall and proud on a quiet road, surrounded by open fields and rolling hills. Its weathered surface bore the marks of centuries of exposure to the elements, while its intricate carvings hinted at the rich history it represented. The cross's isolation added to its mystique, creating a sense of reverence for those who encountered it.

The history of the cross is intertwined with that of Tully Church, a medieval structure that once served as a place of worship for the local community. While the exact age of the cross is uncertain, it is believed to date back to the 12th or 13th century. Its carvings, which depict religious figures and symbols, offer a glimpse into the beliefs and artistic traditions of the time.

The cross's survival is due in part to the efforts of those who recognised its historical significance and took steps to preserve it. In the late 19th century, James Grehan, a local resident, saved the cross from destruction when the road next to it was being lowered. He had a small wall built and the cross placed upon it at its original height. This act of preservation ensured that the cross would continue to stand as a reminder of the area's rich heritage.

Since 2011, the area around the cross has undergone significant changes. The once-quiet country lane is now a pedestrian-only walkway, and the surrounding fields have been developed into residential areas. However, the cross itself remains largely unchanged, its weathered surface and intricate carvings still bearing witness to its long history.

Today, the High Cross of Laughanstown stands as a testament to the enduring power of history and the importance of preserving our cultural heritage. Its continued presence serves as a reminder of the area's rich past and offers a glimpse into the lives of those who came before us. While its surroundings may have changed, the cross itself remains a symbol of continuity and resilience, connecting us to our roots and reminding us of the enduring power of faith and tradition.
