AN ATTRACTIVE BUILDING

THIS IS AN ATTRACTIVE BUILDING

The Dun Laoghaire Town Hall, also known as County Hall, was built in 1879 to serve as the administrative centre for the then Kingstown Township. The location was chosen for its proximity to the harbour, railway station, and other important amenities. The building was designed by architect John Loftus Robinson in a Romanesque Revival style. It was constructed using granite and limestone, with ornate carvings and stained glass windows.

The Town Hall has had a varied history. It initially served as the Kingstown Town Hall, then the Dun Laoghaire Town Hall, and finally the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Hall. Today, it is still used for council meetings and other administrative functions, but also hosts civil ceremonies, cultural events, and guided tours.

The building underwent extensive renovations in the 1990s and early 2000s, but its exterior has remained largely unchanged since I photograph it in 2008. The main changes have been internal, with modernised facilities and updated technology.
