MY AUGUST 2022 VISIT TO LOWER KILMACUD ROAD
In August 2022, I took the Luas tram to the Kilmacud stop and walked to Stillorgan. Based on my experience, this wasn't a good idea especially when carrying a heavy camera on a really hot day. Since then, a new bus service, the L25, has been introduced, connecting Dundrum to Dún Laoghaire via Lower Kilmacud Road. It now makes much more sense to stay on the Luas tram until you reach the Dundrum stop and then catch the L25 bus from the nearby terminus. The L25 bus route is part of BusConnects, the National Transport Authority's programme to significantly improve bus services across Irish cities. Of course there are much better bus options if you wish to travel to Stillorgan Village.
BusConnects aims to provide increased capacity and frequency, especially during evenings and weekends, with more 24-hour services to assist shift workers and support the night-time economy. The BusConnects Network Redesign in Dublin is introducing high-frequency Spine and Radial routes that operate into Dublin city centre, new Orbital routes for faster cross-suburban trips, and new Local routes to provide essential connections within local areas. Peak services will provide additional capacity at the busiest travel times.
Kilmacud and Stillorgan are neighbouring areas in Dublin with a somewhat overlapping identity. It's easy to get confused about where one ends and the other begins, especially when relying on public transport. Don't assume that the Kilmacud or Stillorgan Luas stops will get you exactly where you need to go – Kilmacud, in particular, stretches across a significant distance.
To understand Kilmacud's location, it helps to picture it in relation to its surrounding areas:
North: Goatstown and Mount Merrion
South: Sandyford
East: Stillorgan
West: Dundrum and Balally
The area is defined by two main roads:
Lower Kilmacud Road: Starts in Goatstown and runs southeast, eventually connecting to the N11 Stillorgan dual carriageway. This road is approximately 2.6 kilometres (1.6 miles) long.
Upper Kilmacud Road: Begins in Dundrum, heads east, and then turns north to join Lower Kilmacud Road near St. Laurence's Boys School. It's about 2.9 kilometres (1.8 miles) long.
Adding to the potential confusion, Kilmacud Crokes GAA club is actually located in Stillorgan, while Stillorgan's Catholic parish is named Kilmacud!
Historically, the boundary between the two areas was less clear. A "Stillorgan" place name sign once stood near Beaufield Park on Lower Kilmacud Road, marking what was then the western edge of Stillorgan. This was before the significant housing developments of the 1950s and beyond.
Major stops along the L25 route: Dundrum Luas Stop, Balally Luas Stop, Kilmacud Road Lower, Stillorgan Shopping Centre, Foxrock Church, Dún Laoghaire.
